PRESS RELEASE
Munich, August 21, 2012
Starting signal for the 8th GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN in two weeks / longest distance in the history of this stage run
In two weeks, on September 1, 2012, 250 tag teams from all around the world will start the first of eight stages of the GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN in Ruhpolding at 9 a.m. This year’s east route is incredibly demanding, since with its distance of 320 kilometers it is the longest run in the history of the Alpine classics. Top performance and, above all, stamina is needed for the 15,000 meters altitude difference. In average daily stages of 40 kilometers and 1,900 meters altitude difference the runners will reach the finishing line in Sexten on September 8.
International participants
GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN hasn’t lost its appeal even for this eighth time. This year, the run was already booked out six months before the start which is the earliest time so far. Among the 232 runners at the starting line most of them are from Germany, but Spain (79) and Austria (63) are also well represented. The Alpine classic is meanwhile very popular outside the European borders as well. Participants from Canada (13), Argentina (6), Australia (6), the USA (10), Israel (18) and many other countries bring international flair to this year’s east route over the Alpine main crest.
Mostly filled categories: Men, Master Men and Mixed
The runners are divided in five categories depending on their age and gender. The youngest participant is 22 years old and the oldest respectable 70 years. Especially well-filled with respectively around 30 % of the runners are the categories Men and Master Men (teams that are together over 80 years old) and Mixed (female and male participants of any age). The categories Senior Master Men (teams that are together over 100 years old) and Women are with respectively almost 10% less strong represented.
Former Alpine run world champion Helmut Schiessl at the starting line
One of the top favorites at this year’s GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN is Helmut Schiessl (GER) from the Salomon Trailrunning team, who will start together with his team partner Markus Kröll (AUT) in the category Master Men.
Schiessl is part of the absolute Alpine run world class. Last year this runner from Allgäu was successful at the Otego Pensulina Challenge and the Mt. Loyford Challenge. He also stood at the winner’s podium both at the Glacier 3000 and at the Three Peaks Alpine Run. In 2005, the 40-years old runner won the Alpine run world championship in Cauterts, France.
Kröll is one of the most successful Austrian Alpine runners. The Tyrolean already won the Alpine run ÖM twice (2007 and 2008).
About the GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN:
The GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN has developed rapidly to one of the worldwide most popular trailrun events since its debut in 2005. The participants number is limited to 250 tag teams. The distance varies each year between the west route and this year’s east route.
The starting signal for the eight run will be given in Ruhpolding on September 1, 2012. The route leads over the Austrian towns: St. Johann in Tirol, Kitzbühel and Neukirchen at the Großvenediger as well as over the Italian stage towns: Prettau in Ahrntal, Sand in Taufers, St. Vigil and Niederdorf in Pustertal. On September 8, the runners will reach the finishing line in Sexten.
The event is organized by the Plan B agency (www.planb-event.com). The mountain school Vivalpin (www.vivalpin.com) is responsible for the distance; title sponsor is the brand GORE-TEX®. Their technologies can be found in many leading running and trailrunning brands (www.gore-tex.de).

Final running camp - Peak District
So we have come down to the final stages of this long training stint for this years Transalpine running event. We have had some good days, cold days, hot days, hard days and funny moments along the way. Our final stint on the hills was to be in the Peak District in Derbyshire.
It has been really nice throughout this training to get the chance to train and enjoy some great parts of the UK that I have never been to. I have been to quite a few countries on my travels yet never took the time to discover what my back yard has to offer. The sights and sounds we have all experienced since we started out have been brilliant..... so have the real ales as well!
For those that have never been to the Lake District, Snowdonia and Peak District.........I highly recommend that you do.
This Peak district trip gave us the opportunity to have a few more laughs along the way. Fortunately I wasn't the cause of all of them this time around. I graded them with a Gold, Silver or Bronze.
The Bronze award went to myself. I partially blame Dave for this as his fall made me laugh that much that it through off my balance for a little while after. That resulted in me once again catching a toe on the smallest of stones, sending me crashing to the floor (much to the amusement of JK running behind me).
The Silver went to Dave. He thought it adventurous to jump down a section of the trail, misjudged his landing foot and only just managed to prevent himself falling down the sheer hillside into the water below. As he is known by friends and family to resemble Gollum a bit these days and being a teacher of tai chi - he managed to perform the new 'flying Gollum' position. After his near doom, he mustered the phrase 'ooo that was lucky'
It wouldn't of been the first time he would've fallen 100ft down a cliff!
The Gold award. JK hadn't to this point actually properly fallen over once up until this point...boy did he save up a gooden!
We were coming towards the end of the first days trekking at around the post 7 hour mark, traversing quite a rocky stretch of the trail. Those that have run on this type of surface will testify that when you land on a rock that is unstable that if the next contact with the other foot lands on a stable surface then most often that not you won't come a cropper and stack it onto the floor!
I was so happy that I was running behind him when this happened as he has seen me fall over quite a lot.
So he is bounding about like bambi in a meadow until he hits the wobbly rock but then it happens!! he next step lands on another wobbly rock and SPLAT!!!!
Truth be told it was a heavy fall and looked like a nasty one. My first reaction was one of concern and checking he was ok.
He picked himself up and with a voice that was trying the hold in the multiple areas of pain he said 'argh...I've got a dead forearm'. He didn't know what to do with himself the poor lad. Once I knew he was alright second reaction was to laugh my head off at his misfortune hahaha - I don't know why it is, when your mates hurt themselves it is funny!
A few videos to show now.
Day 1.
Day2.
So there we are, we're at the end of the training.
Next Stop is southern Germany and the start of the 2012 Transalpine Run 1st September..........oh bollox! It's going to hurt ;-)
